Oslo Airport notes record number of passengers
Oslo Airport has announced it saw a record 22.1 million passengers travel through its terminal in 2012, representing a 4.6% increase in traffic compared to 2011.
Growth was driven by international routes, with more than 680,000 (6.1%) additional passengers travelling on these routes, while domestic travel also increased by 2.9% (290,000 passengers) compared to 2011. December 2012 saw the highest level of growth in international travel (+11%), although domestic traffic declined slightly.
Aircraft movements were also up in 2012 as 230,432 aircraft took off and landed at Oslo Airport, representing a 3.1% increase and close to the record set in 2008.
"The increase in 2012 is due to the fact that Norwegians are very fond of travelling, and that Norway has become a more attractive destination. In addition, purchasing power is good in the Norwegian domestic market, creating a huge demand for air travel," said Nic Nilsen, managing director of Oslo Airport.
"It is particularly gratifying to see that some of the new direct routes to exciting destinations are helping to boost the traffic figures at Oslo Airport.
“We are growing steadily and are approaching the limit of what we can handle with the current infrastructure. We are working continuously on adaptations of the current terminal along with construction of the new terminal so that passengers will have a good travel experience at Oslo Airport," concluded Nilsen.
