Surabaya Juanda International Airport, Indonesia, is set to launch the first phase of a commercial tender next month (10 July) enabled by the opening of its new Terminal 2. The development plan aims to upgrade shopping and dining facilities within the airport, and to boost commercial revenue.

Juanda airport general manager Trikola Harjio, as reported by DFNI Online, said, “The innovative retail concepts and pioneering core-themed store layouts are applied to a new passenger terminal to maximise opportunities to bolster passengers spending by strategic partnership with Incheon Airport Consulting.

“The new terminal building is designed to provide modern atmosphere and exciting new experience to passengers with wide open terminal space, natural lightening roof and such passenger focused convenience as shower room and entertainment facility.”

The second phase announcement of the commercial tender will be released in November, when it will showcase the new Terminal 2 facilities. Indonesia’s state-owned airport company Angkasa Pura Airports (AP1) contracted consultants from Seoul Incheon airport in South Korea to work on the upgrade.

President of AP1, Tommy Soetomo, said at the Airport Marketing Forum last month (May) that traffic at Juanda airport reached 16.2m passengers in 2012, recording 12.76% growth in domestic travellers and 23.27% rise in international passengers. He added that passenger numbers are expected to nearly double to 30m in the next five years.

Surabaya Airport has two terminals and is Indonesia’s third-busiest airport after Jakarta and Bali.
