Bulgaria's Varna Airport opens new £33m passenger terminal

Bulgaria’s third largest airport, Varna, has opened a new passenger terminal today (15 August).

The 75m-lev (£33m) terminal is three times bigger than the old building according to Capital Daily and can service 1,037 passengers an hour.

The new terminal, designed by English architects Pascall and Watson in collaboration with Bulgaria’s SavantElbul, has been built to accommodate future expansion.

The Bulgarian and Turkish consortium Tie-ICHTASH carried out construction of the terminal over a period of 20 months. German company Schuessler-Plan provided the management and control systems.

The new terminal is part of an investment programme by Fraport, which owns and operates the airport. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management won a 35-year concession for Varna and Burgas airports, both located by the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, in 2006. According to Capital Daily, the company committed to invest 403m-lev (£176m) in the airports over the 35-year period.

Varna’s passenger terminal was built following increases in passenger traffic. The airport serviced a total of 1.2 million passengers last year.
