Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) in California, USA, reported its seventh consecutive month of year-over-year increased passenger traffic, for an overall calendar year-to-date increase of 4.9%.

The airport served 813,628 departing and arriving passengers in July 2013, a 5.4% rise compared to the same month last year and the seventh consecutive month of recorded increases.

Last month the airport also implemented its Alternate Operations Plan in response to the Asiana Airlines accident at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and handled a total of 52 flight diversions. An additional 8,710 passengers deplaned or enplaned, while SFO operations were impacted for seven days. Factoring those additional passengers out, the overall increase in passengers in July would have been 4.2%.

“We are extremely pleased that our passenger growth continues and that we were able to help SFO and its passengers on July 6 during the tragic events of the Asiana crash,” said director of aviation Bill Sherry. “Bay Area airports compete with each other but, when circumstances dictate, we pull together and collaborate with each other. Ultimately it's all about the passenger and how we can best serve them."

Passenger traffic at SJC began a steady year-over-year increase in January 2013 with 0.9%, followed by increases of 1.1% in February, 5.4% in March, April and June, and 9.5% in May. The upward trend is expected to continue through the current calendar year due to expanded air service choices for Silicon Valley travelers and their ability to travel for business and leisure due to an improving local economy.
