Travel retailer Dufry has reinforced its presence in Brazil by signing long-term contracts with airports in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Viracopos and Natal to operate duty free and duty paid concession spaces.

The agreements will see Dufry operate 19,702m2 of retail space in these locations once all the expansion projects in the different airports are completed. All the contracts with the private airport operators carry a 10-year duration.

Julian Diaz, CEO of Dufry Group, said, “We have been working hard to conclude all these agreements, which were structured as bid processes and requests for proposals. Over the past years, we have identified a substantial potential to improve the travel retail commercially in Brazilian airports.”

Dufry signed a contract this week (1 September) with Brazil's leading airport Guarulhos International (GRU) located in Sao Paulo, which will see the retailer operate the entire duty free space in Terminal 3.

The duty free area in Terminal 3 is expected to be completed by May 2014, Dufry’s Terminal 3 stores will comprise of two general travel retail shops in arrivals and departures, designed as a walk-through concept. Once finished, Dufry will operate 14,223m² of retail space at the airport, including the expansion and upgrading of its stores in GRU’s Terminal 2.

Dufry will also redesign the entire commercial space and operate the duty free and duty paid shops at Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport in Brasilia and at the São Gonçalo do Amarante International airport in Natal. Based on the new contract, Dufry will operate 1,685m² of duty free space and 2,917m² in duty paid at the two airports.

Disclosed earlier this year in April, Dufry signed an agreement with Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos, to operate duty free shops at the Viracopos International Airport for 10 years. Dufry currently operates two duty free shops in airport’s terminal, one in the arrivals area and the other in departures. Both shops have a general travel retail format. In addition, Viracopos has 100m² duty paid shop.

On 20 August 2013, Dufry opened its first duty paid shop at Santa Genoveva Airport Goiania, located in the midwest of Brazil, based on a 5-year contract. The shop comprises 92m2 and will offer the traditional travel retail assortment such as liquors, perfumes and cosmetics, as well as electronics and confectionary.

With the signing of these agreements, Dufry has renewed and expanded its contracts in all airports that have been privatised in Brazil to date.

“Overall, we have secured a very strong business in Brazil for the coming decade and now is the time to organise ourselves to make the next step in the development of the Brazilian market. With these new contracts, we are ready to start a new era of travel retail in Brazil,” Diaz added.
