Winter services are ready to roll and clear runways of the deluge of expected ice and snow set to blanket Munich Airport over the coming months.

The German airport will use around 550 staff members across the season to keep operations working efficiently over the freezing winter.

Last winter was one of the harshest since it opened and Munich’s winter services operating company FMG is braced for another challenging one.

The vehicle fleet includes 200 vehicles, with 24 airblast sweepers, six snow ploughs, sprayers, grit spreading vehicles and 90 snow clearing vehicles, which have to cover Munich Airport’s four million square metre site.

They will be used to keep runways, taxiways, aprons and related service roads and public areas free of ice and snow.

Supplies include 600,000 litres of liquid de-icing agent, 100 tonnes of granular de-icing agent, 600 tonnes of sharp sand, 800 tonnes of crushed stone and 300 tonnes of salt for roads and pathways are at the ready.

The 2012/2013 season saw 73 days of winter operations, much higher than the 50 days in 2011/2012.

The total snowfall last winter amounted to approximately 110 centimetres and the airport's winter services removed around 900,000 cubic metres, or 15,000 truckloads of compacted snow.
