Frankfurt Airport raised €10,000 in the first three months of an environmentally friendly bottle deposit donation initiative.

Since December 2013, passengers and visitors to Germany’s largest aviation gateway, have had the option to put deposits on their returnable bottles and cans to good use.

More than 46,000 bottles and cans have already been donated and the €10,000 mark was cracked last week, faster than anticipated.

A total of 25 bottle-return machines are located in the two passenger terminals are easily accessible, and offer every passenger, or airport employee the opportunity to do an eco-deed.

Martina Pfeffer, head of terminal management at Fraport AG, says: “Even we didn’t expect it to be such a success. The campaign is evidence that it is often the little things that improve our service and allow our passengers to travel with a positive feeling.”

Pfeffer adds airport staff have also been popular users of the deposit initiative and made full use of the service.

Donors can select the organization they wish to donate to and can choose between international or domestic organizations, while donations are then paid out every three months.

Organisations include the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Wings of Help (humanitarian airlifts), and Frankfurt charities Frankfurter Tafel, which feeds the needy and homeless charity Franziskustreff.
