An upgrade tender for Fiji’s main gateway Nadi International Airport has been awarded to New Zealand firm Hawkins Infrastructure.

According to reports the A$29 million redevelopment project is due to start on July 15, with planned completion in October next year.

Faiz Kahn, the executive chairman of Airports Fiji, explains in reports in Australasia the aim is for it to become the 'best small international airport'.

He says he wants Nadi International Airport to be comparable to Gold Coast Airport in Australia, or smaller gateways such as Brisbane Airport.

A large part of the construction is set to be done locally reports claim, with Hawkins Infrastructure to partner with Fiji's largest building company Pacific Building Solutions.

The rebuilding will take place while the airport remains in operation, but some sections of the gateway will be closed during construction, while security is set to be improved in the upgrade.
