ATU Duty Free has been awarded the tender to operate duty free shops at the five Tunisian international airports of Tunis-Carthage, Djerba-Zarzis, Sfax-Thyna, Tozeur-Nefta and Tabarka-Ain Draham.
ATU will run stores at the gateways located on an area of 5,406 square metres in total for eight years and two months, which combined handled eight million passengers in 2013.
The company beat off competition from Dufry, Aer Rianta, and World Duty Free Group, which all participated in the sealed-bid tender, and November 2014 will see the start of ATU's new operations in Tunisia.
Operating in Enfidha and Monastir airports, ATU has now increased the number of airports that it provides services in Tunisia to seven.
ATU Duty Free, general manager, Ersan Arcan, explains: “Winning this tender is a great success for us as having the chance now to expand our operational network in Tunisia which has started in 2009.
“Serving eight million passengers in 2013, these airports are critical operational points for us. Aviation and tourism is making rapid progress in Tunisia and the potential for further growth will help fuel our future success.
“Our new Tunisian operational points will open the gates of Africa to us, where we believe there are genuine opportunities to increase the scope and scale of our business.”
The firm was founded as a joint venture between TAV Airports and Unifree Duty Free / Gebr. Heinemann.
Headquartered in Istanbul, ATU currently operates duty free stores at airports in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Gazipasa in Turkey; Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi in Georgia; Enfidha and Monastir in Tunisia; Skopje and Ohrid in Macedonia; Riga in Latvia; Salalah in Oman and Medinah in Saudi Arabia.
