London Luton Airport served more than 1.2 million passengers in September 2015, a 19.2% increase when compared with the same period in 2014 and a new record for the month of September.

Nick Barton, CEO of London Luton Airport, said, “Luton Airport is continuing to see unprecedented demand for air travel – September marks the 18th consecutive month of passenger growth.

“These record passenger numbers demonstrate the increasing popularity of the airport with travelers. They also highlight the importance of expanding the airport to help meet the capacity needs in the Southeast. The appointment of Whitemountain and the relocation of security are major strides forward in our plans to ensure we can continue both to meet growing demand in future and improve the overall passenger experience.”

Engineering firm Whitemountain had been appointed to deliver the first major construction phase of the airport’s £100m (US$155m) redevelopment project. This includes the construction of landside infrastructure and transport facilities such as transforming the approach road to the terminal building into a dual carriageway. The project aims to increase the airport’s annual capacity from 12 million to 18 million by 2026.
