Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics has been contracted to modernize and expand the baggage handling system (BHS) in Terminal 1 (T1) at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport in China.

The new state-of-the-art BHS will include 87 check-in kiosks as well as nine baggage carousels in the arrivals area and seven carousels in the make-up area. Siemens will also install approximately 4,600ft of conveyors, a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a SCADA system for computer-based monitoring and the control of all technical processes. Work is scheduled for completion by summer 2019.

Dai Xiao Jian, vice general manager of Shanghai Airport Authority Group, which runs both Hongqiao and Pudong International airports, said, “In the first half of 2015, for the first time, the two Shanghai airports overtook Beijing as China’s largest aviation hub. The modernization of the BHS will make a decisive contribution toward establishing and further extending this position.”
