More than 713 thousand passengers were handled at Chopin Airport in April 2011, an increase of 33.6% year-on-year. The record growth is a bounce-back from 2010’s decline due to the volcanic ash cloud.

“After the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, much of Europe’s airspace was closed and most flights were grounded. This caused major losses and now we are making up for the shortfall,” said Warsaw ChopinAirport’s deputy director, Andrzej Ilków.

According to preliminary data, the airport handled over 2.5 million passengers in the first four months of 2011, 11.2% more than in the corresponding period last year.
Domestic passenger numbers continue to grow, with more than 316.3 thousand travellers served since the beginning of the year (an increase of 28.5%).

International passengers, however, still account for the majority of traffic – 2.18 million pax so far in 2011 (up by 9.1%).

The total number of aircraft movements in April increased by 20.4% to 11.4 thousand.

Chopin Airport is the largest airport in Poland. It handles scheduled, charter and cargo traffic. In 2010, the airport served over 8.7 million passengers (138.6 thousand aircraft movements), which represents 43% of Poland’s passenger traffic.
