Design teams pitch for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol new terminal

Five international design teams have presented their ideas for a new terminal at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands, with the winner expected to be announced in September.

The airport is set to be expanded considerably, including a new pier in 2019 and a new terminal in 2023. The expansion coincides with the pace at which footfall through the airport has increased in recent years.

Schiphol’s ambition for the airport states it must be sustainable, future-proof, and must include the latest digital innovations. Specific attention should also be given to the character of the airport, tying in with the existing infrastructure while being highly efficient.

The new terminal will form an expansion of Schiphol’s existing terminal and will adjoin departure and arrival halls 1. Keeping the buildings together allows Schiphol to retain the one terminal concept, and ensure that all the facilities are under one roof. The last time that Schiphol permanently expanded the terminal was in 1993, when the current departure and arrival halls 3 and 4 were built.

The international design teams that prequalified to present their designs were Kaan Architects in collaboration with Estudio Lamela and ABT, UNstudio together with HOK and Arup, MVRDV with KPF and Meinhardt, O.M.A. together with WSP I Parsons Brinckerhoff, and S.O.M. with ADPI.

The jury consists of Ginger Evans (commissioner, Chicago Department of Aviation, O’Hare International Airport), Mark Husser (managing partner at Grimshaw Architects), Hans de Jonge (real estate expert and emeritus professor), Maurits Schaafsma (senior aviation urban planner), Gerard Geurtjens (project director), Stefan Langerak (senior procurement manager) and Bernardo Gogna (capital program director).
