Doncaster Sheffield Airport Set to Reopen with £160m Funding Package

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has moved a step closer to reopening after the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Board unanimously approved a £159.52 million funding package to support the return of commercial flights.

The decision was taken at a board meeting held at the airport on 9 September, with all five members voting in favour. The new funding comes in addition to £16 million previously committed by the Board.

The meeting was chaired by South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, alongside Barnsley Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton, Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones, Rotherham Council Leader Chris Read and Sheffield City Council Leader Tom Hunt.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in November 2022, leaving the region without a commercial international airport. Since then, regional leaders, local authority partners and the UK Government have worked to explore options for restoring aviation services to the area.

The newly approved funding is intended to support the airport’s reopening and establish a sustainable future for aviation in South Yorkshire.
