Huge explosion rocks Damascus airport

This morning a massive explosion has shaken the area surrounding Damascus International Airport (DAM), according to Syrian and international media.

Syria’s Al-Mayadeen TV channel reports that the blast had caused a fire in close proximity to Damascus International Airport. The cause of the explosion is still not known.

Videos from the area have instantly emerged on social networks, with Lebanese pro-Hezbollah Al-Manar television channel already blaming Israeli air forces for the incident.

Rebel sources from the Damascus area claim that the explosion was caused by strikes at an ammunition depot close to Damascus airport that is used by Iranian-backed army forces. Rebels claim that at least five strikes have hit the airport area this morning, according to a report from Reuters.

Israel’s Minister of Intelligence commented that what happened in Damascus goes in line with Israel’s policy of preventing weapon transferals to Hezbollah. He did not, however, officially confirm or deny that Israel performed an air strike.
