Queenstown Airport Launches Major Airfield Upgrade and Terminal Expansion Programme

Queenstown Airport has begun delivering the largest capital works programme in its history, with a NZ$65 million package of airfield improvements now under way and plans progressing for a major terminal extension and upgrade.
The airfield programme includes construction of a new Code C heavy taxiway and a complete overlay of the airport’s main runway. Work has now started and is expected to be completed by summer next year.
Alongside the airfield improvements, concept designs are being developed for a significant extension and upgrade of the terminal. Queenstown Airport is working with architects Warren & Mahoney and Hassell on the plans, while continuing to invest in other critical operational infrastructure.
Construction is also due to begin on a new Green Star-certified two-storey office building beside Lucas Place. The facility will accommodate Queenstown Airport staff and partner agencies, providing additional space to support the airport’s increasingly complex operation.
Chief Executive Shane O’Hare said detailed planning for the airport’s capital works programme was well advanced and delivery was accelerating.
“As we look ahead, our goal is clear: to deliver world-class outcomes for our customers while maintaining the trust and confidence of our community. Demand for travel is expected to remain strong, and our focus will be on delivering the infrastructure, partnerships and planning needed to support that growth responsibly.”

The infrastructure programme follows another year of strong passenger demand at Queenstown Airport, with 2.82 million passenger movements recorded during the year to 30 June 2026, including more than one million international passenger movements for the first time.
Mr O’Hare said the milestone reinforced Queenstown Airport’s role as an important international gateway and highlighted the continued importance of the Australian market.
Queenstown Airport Corporation Chair Simon Flood said continued investment was essential to supporting the airport’s long-term role in the region.
“Queenstown Airport is a critical piece of regional and national infrastructure, enabling connections between people and places, businesses and markets. The airport also influences about $1 billion in economic activity, underscoring the scale of its contribution and the importance of ensuring the airport continues to be well-planned, well-governed, and well-managed for the future.”

The airport also celebrated its 90th anniversary during the year and was named Large Airport of the Year at the 2025 NZ Airports Awards.
Queenstown Airport said its future focus will remain on delivering the infrastructure, partnerships and long-term planning required to accommodate continued growth while maintaining safe and efficient operations.
