  • The €16 million contract covers runway resurfacing, a new taxiway and the reorganisation of aircraft parking stands.
  • The works will require the runway to close for approximately 40 days in autumn 2028, with arrangements coordinated with local authorities and airlines.
  • Passengers will be given advance notice to help them plan their journeys.

San Sebastián Airport is to undergo runway and aircraft parking apron works, alongside improvements to various airfield infrastructure elements, from early 2028 through to spring 2029. Aena has put the contract out to tender with a total value of €16,578,538.93.

Due to the nature of the works and the infrastructure involved, the runway will need to close for approximately 40 days in autumn 2028 to allow the most extensive works to be carried out. The closure will be coordinated with local authorities and in collaboration with airlines, ensuring passengers receive the information they need well in advance to plan their journeys.

Airlines and the various companies providing services at the airport will also receive detailed information about the construction schedule sufficiently far in advance, allowing them to reschedule operations at alternative airports and reorganise their activities.

Main works

The largest element of the project will be the complete renovation of runway 04/22. The works will include resurfacing and grooving the pavement, upgrading the airfield lighting system to LED technology, and improving the associated drainage and ducting infrastructure.

The aircraft parking apron will also be renovated and modernised. This will involve reconstructing pavement surfaces, reorganising aircraft stands, constructing a new taxiway, and improving drainage systems and associated infrastructure.

Finally, the project includes modifications to runway turning pads and various elements within the runway strip. Improvements to San Sebastián Airport’s airfield infrastructure will include extending the turning pads at both runway ends, upgrading the associated signage and airfield lighting systems, installing touchdown zone lights, and carrying out pavement works and modifications to existing infrastructure.
